Apostille?

An Apostille is a certification issued by a government needed when a document is utilised abroad. Its primary objective is to verify the authenticity of the signature, seal, or stamp on the document, a task often undertaken by a notary public. Apostilles are granted in accordance with the Hague Apostille Convention of 5 October 1961, obviating the need for the legalisation of foreign public documents.

Why an Apostille?

Through Apostilles, documents acquire international recognition, validating the signature and/or seal of the public official, including a notary public, who has authenticated or certified the document. This streamlined process significantly facilitates document recognition across borders.

Do I need an Apostille?

In certain situations, foreign countries may not necessitate an apostille for documents issued in England and Wales. In such cases, the certification provided by a notary public is deemed sufficient to validate the document internationally. Contact us to explore further details and options available to you.

Do I need Consular Legalisation?

At times, foreign countries may require consular legalisation in addition to an apostille. This additional step is necessary for a document to be recognised abroad, ensuring its validity and acceptance in international contexts. Contact us to explore further details and options available to you

The apostille certificate, measuring approximately 15cms square, is affixed permanently to another document. An embossing mechanism, known as the apostille seal or apostille stamp, is employed to impress the document with a government crest. This procedure is commonly termed ‘apostilling’ a document. While the certificate is usually attached to the back of a document, in instances where the document has print on both sides, it may be positioned on the front in the most appropriate location.

Apostille and documents signed by a notary public

Certainly, not all documents issued in England and Wales require a notary public’s certification. However, there is a range of documents where a certification issued by a notary public is needed as an apostille itself will not suffice. Here is a non- comprehensiv  list of such documents:

What is a notarisation?

Notarisation involves the certification of documents by a notary public, verifying the authenticity of signatures and ensuring the document’s legal standing. Once notarised, these documents can then proceed to the apostille process for international recognition.

For more detailed information on notarisation and the specific requirements for different types of documents, it’s advisable to seek guidance or consult the relevant authorities in your jurisdiction.
